A big weekend of Championships for FNRSA Bowls Club During the weekend of 14 – 15th January 13 bowlers, including two 1st year schoolgirl bowlers contested the title of The FNRSA Bowls Club Women’s singles Championship. Come Sunday morning there were only 4 players remaining being Liz Muru and Reo King-Bennett both with 2 lives left and Dorothy Hardy and Evelyn Bradley each with one life left. It is interesting to note that 3 of these finalists are J 8 (8 years or less playing experience) players. In the next round Liz Muru beat Reo King-Bennett. Evelyn beat Dorothy. Evelyn then had a bye and Reo with a very close margin took a life off Liz. This left Evelyn playing Liz, both with one life left which Liz won. The final (1st to 21 shots) was between Reo and Liz which took 25 ends to complete. It was 16-15 to Liz at the 22nd end but Liz then went on to win the championship 21-15.
Saturday 14th January the 1st year Men’s singles bowls championships were also played. All four contestants this year were very keen schoolboys. In the first round Brian Cox beat Kiripaka Kara and Cole Kara beat Ezrah Hill. The second round Brian proved too strong a player for Cole and Ezrah won over Kiripaka. Cole then defeated Ezrah while Brian had a bye. In the final Brian Cox with 2 lives played Cole with one life. This match proved to be a great competition lasting 26 ends and all equal 16-16 at the 24th end but Brian went on to win the 1st Year Championship 21-16
Sunday was the turn for the 1st year Women’s Championships. There were 3 contenders for this title, 2 of which were keen schoolgirl bowlers. The First game saw Aroha Kara have a bye while Violet Kara played Pat Watkins with Violet winning and having the next bye. Pat then played Aroha with the score 19 all when time was up (1hr 45min). Pat winning the point on the extra end to play 10 year old Violet who had 2 lives left in the final/possible final. Violet proved too strong for Pat (this was her 1st game of bowls) Violet Kara becoming the 1st Year Women’s singles champion and the Club’s youngest ever winner of this title.
J8 (8 playing years and under) Championship Single 21-22 January. Men: 6 entries which included 3 1st year players. At the conclusion of the 1st day Mike Reddy 2 lives and Greg Taylor 1 life played the Final/Possible Final with a very close game of excellent bowls being played with Mike up 19-18 after 21 ends. Mike then scored 2 shots to take out the championship 21-18 Women: There was 6 entries which was reduced to 2 at the end of the 1st day’s play. Evelyn Bradley 2 lives and Joanne Milich 1 life playing a Final/Possible Final. Evelyn got a way to a good start and went on to win the Championship 21-9. This game was played in very trying conditions with strong gusts of wind.
