FNRSA Kaitaia Bowling Club Opening Day
Sixty ,keen, eager to start the new season, bowlers from Coopers Beach, Kaitaia Church Road, Houhora and host club FNRSA Kaitaia Bowls Club contested the 2017 opening day KPH Construction Ltd Mixed Triples competition on Saturday 26 August. At 9am, President Ian Macnee welcomed all the players who had by then assembled outside the clubrooms. He then remarked how this tournament has being sponsored now by KPH Construction every year for over 20 years. After introducing the executive committee, the Patron and elder statesman of the club, Bruce Bird delivered the first Jack, followed by Brian Cox, our men’s 1st year singles champion delivered the first bowl.
Following that the 20 teams throughout the day each played 4 games of one hour five minutes. And each team also had one bye.
Paul Huxtable representing the sponsor KPH Construction Ltd presented the prizes as follows:
Starting from:
5th place: John Hodgson, Joanne Millich, Kevin Briscoe, 3 wins, 19 ends, 45 points, 13 ends against
4th Nigel Leslie, Glenis Love, and Barry Morgan also 3 wins, 19 ends, 45 points and 10 ends against.
3rd Al Thom, Jill Phillips and Paul Burren 4 wins, 20 ends 49 points
2nd Barry Allison, Colin Hazeldine and Margaret Wildbore 4 wins 21 ends 48 points.
President Ian Macnee was then asked to present the prize to the top winning team of
1st place: Paul Huxtable, Jean Huxtable and Kiripaka Kara (winner last year) 4 wins, 23 ends, 55 points.
The lucky looser boxes of chocolates went to the team of Winnie Burkhardt, Colin May and Freda May.
The gold coin tin for those who had delivered a wrong bias bowl, was quite a bit heavier after the numerous players owned up to their wrong bias bowling. (the money from this is donated to the Hospice)
Ian Macnee thanked the greenkeeper Kevin Briscoe, for the hours of work he puts in each week to ensure we have a good playing field, Dawn the caterer for the excellent morning and afternoon teas, Kath the raffle ticket seller, and Jean Huxtable for convening the tournament assisted by Pat Haines.
Our next open tournament is: Wednesday 20 September the Geard’s Funeral Home mixed 2 x 4 x 2.
